Some (Free) Practical Advice on How to Preach Better Sermons

If you’re like me, this week I’m working on my next message and beginning to plot out another series for a few months down the road.

It’s a labour of love. And yet so many preachers are, well, let’s say less effective than we might be.

Often the problem is not what you say – it’s how you say it.

Great content is king for sure. But if content was king, people would be reading instruction manuals recreationally. They don’t.

Personally, I love getting better at the how of preaching and communication, not just the what.

So in this post, I’m linking to several of my blog posts on preaching without using notes and how to get people to listen when you speak.

I’m also passing along some tips my friends at Preaching Rocket have compiled and information on how you can register for their free Preach Better Sermons event. It features some of the very best communicators in the world: Andy Stanley, Louie Giglio, Steven Furtick, Mark Driscoll, Dave Ramsey, Jon Acuff, Nancy Duarte and so many more.

And it completely fits your budget. Because it’s all 100% free.

I hope this helps you. I promise you that thinking through these things has helped me.

So here are 4 blog posts that can help free you from your notes and preach so people will listen:

How to Deliver a Talk Without Using Notes

5 Keys to Writing a Talk You Can Deliver Without Using Notes

Why People Don’t Respond When You Talk to Them

And now some insights (and the link to the free conference) from my friends at Preaching Rocket:

1. Great preaching comes from a great preparation system. Dave Ramsey knows how to use humor in communication. His witty and pithy sayings tickle the funny bone and are memorable. But, he knows this kind of communication doesn’t effortlessly roll off the tip of your tongue. Ramsey will talk about the system he uses to prepare to speak at the PreachBetterSermons.com FREE online event on May 1st.

2. Knowing the keys to crafting a great message is half the preparation battle. Jon Acuff knows the core essentials to a great message. He’ll share what makes a talk capture the audience and stay with them after it’s over. Nancy Duarte knows how to use contrast to bring on the best in your message. She’ll share how to create a message that people not only hear, but also see. You’ll learn the keys to masterful story-telling on the Preach Better Sermons online event.

3. Developing a sermon planning system takes the pain out of preparation. There are things you can do on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis that will dramatically improve your preparation time and help you deliver better messages. Pete Wilson will share his preparation process. Helping you put something like this into place will be a part of the free online event.

You’ve prepared your sermon. You’re ready for Sunday... Or are you?

The #1 factor people look for in a church is the quality of the preaching. In fact, 86% of people choose a church based on that.

So if you step back and take a look in the mirror for a moment...

  • Does your sermon prep get the time it deserves?
  • And when was the last time you took a big step forward in becoming a better preacher?

Most Pastors aren't happy with the answers they give to those questions.

How to preach more engaging, memorable, and relevant sermons—starting as early as this week.

Now, take a minute to imagine feeling confident that your message would connect on Sunday morning, knowing you’d deliver it clearly and truthfully.

It’s time to ditch the random, stressful, and last-minute approach to becoming a better preacher and communicator.

Get a proven method to preach sermons that reach more people and grow your church in The Art of Preaching. It's the only program trusted by 3,000+ pastors over 5+ years—no matter the denomination or church size—that will transform your preaching from preparation to delivery.

  • You’ll save hours each week with a better sermon prep process.
  • You’ll write messages people remember for months… or even years.
  • You’ll deepen your own connection with the text, seeing things you never noticed before.
  • You’ll be able to (finally) deliver your message without using notes.
  • You’ll preach sermons that reach more people and transform the lives of churched and unchurched people alike.
