3 Things You Can Do Right Away

Jon tells us how humor breaks up monotony in life’s stick situations.  He shares his insight on how he learned to laugh at himself while taking risks:

  1. Find your unique style of humour. You have to be your kind of funny, not someone else’s. Not everyone is wired to have the same humor. Leaders get in trouble when they try to duplicate someone else, and there’s nothing as unfunny as a leader who’s trying too hard to be someone they’re not.
  2. Build a comic sequence out of a single moment. Find your niche in the way you tell a story. If you tell a joke, identify the one obscure thing in that scenario, and tell jokes around it. Think outside the box here. What makes that moment unique? That’s where you’ll find humor. When you can re-create those moments in a story, your audience will laugh with you.
  3. Success takes risks.  No one will care about your goals as much as you, because it’s your goal. It’s a myth to think that if you go off on your own, you’ll have no boss, but you’re always serving someone, and you’ll serve someone for the rest of your life. Jon also says to be deliberate about measuring your results, and admit when you need to do something different. You’ll find gifts in learning about how much you don’t know.

Love the podcast. Did I hear you say something about personal boards or something along those lines?

    • Carey Nieuwhof on December 13, 2015 at 5:31 am

Yes. I’ll explain more in a future episode, but basically a personal advisory board is a few wise individuals you select to hold you accountable and help you plan your future steps. They help you steward your life and leadership.
