Jon Gordon helps leaders stay positive, and realized most people spend their entire lives dealing with what he calls the “5 D’s”—Doubt, Distortion, Discouragement, Distraction and Division.

INSIGHTS FROM JON

1. If your people are Zoomed out, you might need to be more interactive

Both Carey and Jon are hearing from a lot of leaders that their people are getting “Zoomed out.” Jon has found a way to make his Zoom coaching calls with hundreds of people engaging and interactive. So, how does he do it?

Rather than giving an hour-long monologue, Jon finds a way to involve his audience throughout the session. Through Zoom, his team deploys polls, pushes the audience into smaller groups and even does a live Q&A where the audience asks their questions on video.

When Jon sets his training up in this way, his people are much less “Zoomed out” afterwards.

2. Many people don’t realize they are in a battle right now, and that’s why they’re losing

Most people don’t even realize they are fighting a battle every day in life. In his new book, The Garden, Jon helps people see that the negativity, stress and anxiety we all are feeling is the result of a battle raging for our souls. And, if we want to win the battle against stress and anxiety, we need to see the 5 D’s:

  • Doubt
  • Distortion
  • Discouragement
  • Distraction
  • Division

When you are able to identify these 5 tactics, you can start to win the war against stress and anxiety.

3. If you struggle to stay motivated, change your thinking

A lot of leadership is the battle won inside your mind. During the interview, Jon talked about how optimists are statistically more successful than pessimists, and that encouragement and positivity always go further than discouragement and negativity. If you want to succeed, you have to be able to tell yourself that brighter days are ahead.

The same thing happens with motivation. Zig Ziglar made a great point when he was told, “Zig, motivation doesn’t last.” He responded, “Neither does bathing. That’s why you have to do it every day.” Jon agrees and points out that before you can feed the people you lead, you have to feed your own motivation first.

Quotes from Episode 376

My faith in God doesn't make life easier, it makes me stronger. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet We don't give up because it's hard, we give up because we get discouraged. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet Duke University did a study on optimists and they found they worked harder, got paid more and were more likely to succeed in business and sports. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet What we believe determines what we create. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet The enemy knows that he can't beat us himself. So, what does he do? He gets us to beat ourselves. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet Whenever we're filled with doubt, it really means that we're not trusting in God. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet The whole goal of doubt, distortion, discouragement, and distractions is to ultimately divide you, to separate you from God. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet A distraction is anything that keeps you from being all that you were meant to be, from being what God has planned for you. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet Put courage into yourself by encouraging yourself. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet Distractions are the enemy of greatness. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet When you know what kind of legacy you want to leave, that helps you decide how to live today. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet If you win today and don't worry about tomorrow, you're going to create a great future. @JonGordon11 Click To Tweet Celebrate what God is doing through others. Focus on what he's called you to do. @cnieuwhof Click To Tweet The enemy of all organizations is indifference. @cnieuwhof Click To Tweet
