1. Are you repeating the past or creating the future?
Every person on the planet battles fear, and church leaders are no exception. In fact, church leaders may even be more prone to fear because of the nature of our work. As young leaders, we often start out taking lots of risks and running towards fear. Then, somewhere over the course of time, we get comfortable. We repeat the past instead of creating the future.
God puts dreams in our heart and it’s our job to step out in obedience to chase them, even if they make us fearful. Like Benaiah, who chased down a lion on a snowy day, are you going to run away from your fear or run towards the roar?
2. When do you know when it’s a dream worth chasing?
Some of us are natural dreamers and have more dreams in a day than others do in a month. If we chased down every single dream, we’d get nothing accomplished. How do you know which dreams are the ones worth chasing? Lots of prayer. Prayer will lead to discernment.
If God wants you to step out of the boat, step out of the boat. But if God wants you to stay put, you better stay put. Knowing the difference is good discernment.
3. It’s not always about accomplishing a dream, but about who you become in the process.
Mark told us about how he planted a church. He had a 25 year plan, but the church didn’t last a year. If you isolate that incident, it may seem like a failure. But the truth is: Had that plant not failed, Mark likely wouldn’t be at NCC in D.C. impacting thousands of people with worldwide reach. Success and failure isn’t the ultimate measuring stick, it’s obedience.
Everyone has a dream. Most of the dreams that became reality took so much longer than what Joseph or Abraham or the other dreamers ever wanted. You have to trust God’s timing and mysterious ways. When you’re obedient, God honors that.
