Welcome to Episode 1 of the Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast. In this episode, I interview Andy Stanley, Lead Pastor of North Point Community Church.

Among other things, Andy talks about how he keeps growing as a leader, why, in his view, North Point grew as rapidly as it did to become one of America’s largest churches, what he thinks of communicators who use his content (and where he gets his message ideas from), and how Andy and his team are adapting to a constantly changing culture.

Andy Stanley is one of the most sought after communicators and leaders in the church today. He started North Point Community Church in 1995 with 5 other leaders.

North Point has grown to 6 Metro-Atlanta area campuses and over 20 Strategic Partnerships across North America. He is the author of numerous books. He and his wife Sandra have three grown children.

Some of Andy’s most memorable quotes from this episode:

3 Things You Can Do Right Away

Andy’s interview was full of great advice.

While there’s so much you could do after listening to Andy, here are 3 things you can do this week:

1. Discover your strengths and lead from them. Allowing your team to do what they’re best at, and focusing on what you’re best at allows your team and ministry to optimally advance your mission.

2. Let your team see you learn. Try Andy’s practice of reading a book with your staff or volunteer team. It will let them see you learn.

3. Go through the struggle of writing your own content. As much as it’s tempting to want to be someone else or borrow (or plagiarize) what other preachers are teaching, there’s no substitute for opening the scriptures and preparing your own messages. Even if you borrow other people’s content from time to time, preparing your own content positively impacts your leadership over the long run. Constantly borrowing someone else’s diminishes your leadership over time.
