1. We need to become more comfortable talking about money
Bob Lotich is the author of Simple Money, Rich Life and founder of SeedTime, an online community dedicated to wise money practices. According to Bob, one of our biggest issues with money comes down to the fact that we’re not educated about money or encouraged to talk about money. Money management is not a curriculum focus in any public schools, and we still carry a cultural stigma around openly discussing finances.
2. A person’s wealth is more than their net worth
When we think about wealth, we tend to think of net worth, or how much money or liquid assets you have at your disposal. But based on the “modern English” translation of a famous Welsey quote – “Make More, Save More, Give More” – there are different ways of calculating your “worth” that go beyond how much money you have in the bank.
For example, Bob recommends tracking your “net given,” or the amount of money you tip, donate and tithe and encourages people to celebrate “giving” milestones as much as they would celebrate saving milestones.
3. Understand that money is a tool, not the end goal
At the end of the podcast, Bob shares his final piece of financial advice: Never view making more money as the end goal. Money is a tool, not a goal. If you view money as the purpose of the pursuit, you’ll end with a warped view of yourself and your finances. The secret to wise money management is viewing money as a resource to help you accomplish your mission on Earth.
