SeedTime founder, Bob Lotich, had a life-changing moment at age 20 where he found himself completely out of money with a broken down vehicle in the middle of the road. Out of that, he created a profitable online business on how to handle money as he learned a new approach to money himself.
He talks about how he built his company, finding an audience in the already-crowded personal finance space on the internet, and why John Wesley’s mantra to, “Earn all you can, save all you can and give all you can,” is still a solid one today.

Generis
Vision is a pillar in creating a culture of generosity—and your God-inspired vision is what unifies your church community and inspires your givers. But for almost every church, that vision tends to outpace their resources, leaving a gap between where they are and making that vision a reality.
Our friends at Generis can help close that gap by partnering with you to develop a thriving culture of generosity in your church— a culture that is discipleship-driven, biblically rooted, and funds your vision for years to come.
Learn how you can accelerate generosity in your church in a FREE 45-minute discovery session at generis.com/carey.
The Unstuck Group
Leaders tend to see decline on the horizon first, through a variety of signs:
- People are leaving and not coming back, and you’re not reaching new people
- Or you recognize the need to build a hybrid ministry strategy for the future, but don’t know where to start
- Maybe the ministry of today isn’t matching the skills of the staff you currently have—or the positions you’ll need for the future
All in all, you just feel stuck and need a clear path forward.
If this sounds like you, I recommend The Unstuck Group. Their proven process helps pastors assess ministry health, clarify a vision for the future and create the team structure and action plans to see it through.

Insights From Bob
1. We need to become more comfortable talking about money
Bob Lotich is the author of Simple Money, Rich Life and founder of SeedTime, an online community dedicated to wise money practices. According to Bob, one of our biggest issues with money comes down to the fact that we’re not educated about money or encouraged to talk about money. Money management is not a curriculum focus in any public schools, and we still carry a cultural stigma around openly discussing finances.
2. A person’s wealth is more than their net worth
When we think about wealth, we tend to think of net worth, or how much money or liquid assets you have at your disposal. But based on the “modern English” translation of a famous Welsey quote – “Make More, Save More, Give More” – there are different ways of calculating your “worth” that go beyond how much money you have in the bank.
For example, Bob recommends tracking your “net given,” or the amount of money you tip, donate and tithe and encourages people to celebrate “giving” milestones as much as they would celebrate saving milestones.
3. Understand that money is a tool, not the end goal
At the end of the podcast, Bob shares his final piece of financial advice: Never view making more money as the end goal. Money is a tool, not a goal. If you view money as the purpose of the pursuit, you’ll end with a warped view of yourself and your finances. The secret to wise money management is viewing money as a resource to help you accomplish your mission on Earth.

Next Episode: Philip Yancey
Philip Yancey grew up in a church culture he describes as white, racist, paranoid fundamentalism. After deconstructing his faith in his late teens, Philip describes how he came back to faith, or found authentic Christianity, and why he loves talking to exvangelicalism. He also talks about how writing has changed, and how to write about your family pain while your family is still living.
