3 Insights from This Episode
1. Don’t give in to Imposter Syndrome.
Most of us are scared of being “found out” that we don’t know nearly as much as others think we do. This feeling breeds insecurity and inadequacy. Ultimately, it leads to believing lie: I must know everything about everything.
The truth is, you don’t. And it’s not your job to. The best leaders don’t just solve problems… they find problems (and develop other people to help solve them). One of the best things you can do is to be honest when you don’t know the answer to a question and say “you know, the person you really need to talk to about this is…”
2. Don’t Let What starts with you end with you.
A lot of leaders believe the lie: I must be prominent and lead from the front.
If your identity is tied up in being up front, it can be really threatening to have someone else interested in sharing the spotlight. A question to ask yourself is: How do I want this to end? If you don’t want the church to end with you, then you have to give someone else the microphone from time to time. Don’t let what starts with you, end with you.
3. Are you willing to hire someone who is better than you?
Another lie leaders believe is: My followers’ success is a threat to me.
There’s a theory out there that if, on a 1 – 10 scale, you’re a 7… you’ll hire 5s and 6s. That’s because most of us want to hire people who are below us. But that’s a flawed way of thinking. It’s easy to hire a smart accountant if you don’t have an interest in accounting, but how about when it’s on our own territory?
We need to strive to be the kinds of leaders who celebrate success and not be threatened because of it. Nobody has ever been fired for raising up a team of rockstars. When we develop people’s talent so well that they thrive, it’s called good leadership.
